View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast Phyllis Jean Carson Shupe, 78, died Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at her residence on North James Campbell Blvd. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church with Rev. Tommy Vann and Rev. Hubert Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at the church. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Hinton, West Virginia she was the daughter of the late Charles Ernie Carson and Emma Grace Meador Carson. On November 4, 1954 she married Otto Bruce Shupe who preceded her in death October 28, 1995. Mrs. Shupe owned and operated "Mama Jean's Daycare" for over thirty years. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, sang in the choir, was a member of the United Methodist Women and the church bowling league. Survivors include daughters, Sharon (Donald) Sharp, Debra (Mike) Thomas, Shelia (Alan) Rogers all of Columbia; step-son Harrison Shupe of Fries, Virginia; step-daughter, Luann (Buddy) Mays of Kingsland, Georgia; sister, Margaret Smith of Wesley Chapel, Florida; grandson, Wesley Thomas of Columbia; special little friend, Jesse Thomas; several step-grandchildren, Michael Shupe, Heather Osborne, Leisa Mays, Rhonda Mays, Karen Mays, Donna Chapman; several step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Carson and sisters, Lucille Beasley, Almetia Lilly, June Meadows and Margie Carson. Serving as active pallbearers are Kenneth Pitts, Cecil Conner, Jim Carpenter, Ricky Woody, Ben Woody, Ted Johnson, Jimmy Rippey, Jeff Thomas, Lawrence Horner and Shayne Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be Barbara and Harry Rountree, Betty and Ray Parker, Linda Rippey-Moore, J.C. Gray, members of St. Luke United Methodist Church, employees of Hospice Compassus, Maury Regional Medical Center Oncology Unit and former children of "Mama Jean's Daycare."
