Jerry Martin Young

June 12, 1940 — April 14, 2015

Mr. Jerry Martin Young, 74, retired insurance agent, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 14, 2015 in his home on West 17th Street where he had lived since he was nine years old. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Kane officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Inman Young, Sr. and Pearl Brown Young. He was a 1958 graduate of Central High School. On June 10, 1961 he married the love of his life, JoAnne Thomas Young, who preceded him in death on November 28, 2007. Upon their marriage she moved into his family home and together they reared their three children in the 150 year old home where he had grown up. Jerry retired after twenty-one years employment with National Life and Accident Insurance and American General Insurance. He always loved sports and in his early life coached football and baseball. He was an executive member of the Table of Knowledge at Bucky's Restaurant for over twenty years and had enjoyed collecting and refinishing antiques, drawing and poetry. Jerry was a very compassionate man and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include daughters, Kimberly (Donovan) Weaver of Nashville, Katrina (Eric) Gray of Columbia; son, Zane Young of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Chasity (Jamin) Ortgiesen of Nashville, Brady Green of Columbia; great-grandson, Austin Hails of Nashville; sister-in-law, Carolyn (James) Fly of Hampshire, brother-in-law, Ray Thomas of California; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Inman Young, Jr. and James Leighton Young; and sisters, Margie Young Collins and Sue Young Mack. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include members of Bucky's Table of Knowledge and classmates from Central High School Class of 1958.
