View Funeral Webcast Jewell Covey Cothron Cheek, 94, former resident of West Sixth Street and Poplar Estates, died Friday, February 8, 2013 at Life Care of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Wendell Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Rose Hill Cemetery, P. O. Box 1015, Columbia 38402. Notes of condolence may be extended at oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Christopher Columbus "Lum" Cothron and Mary Virginia Holcomb Cothron. On April 22, 1933, she married J. V. Cheek, Sr., long-time Sexton of Rose Hill Cemetery. Their sixty-four year marriage ended with his death December 1, 1997. As a young lady, she worked at E. I. DuPont Corporation and later in the office of Dr. O. K. Matthews. For many years, she was receptionist at Orman Photo Shop and representative for Mary Kay Cosmetics. Mrs. Cheek was a charter member of Graymere Church of Christ and a faithful member as long as her health allowed. She was a wonderful cook and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Survivors include her children, Valree (Bill) Weaver of Woodbury, Joan (Larry) Oatts of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, J. V. "Junior" (Brenda) Cheek, Jr. of Suwanee, Georgia, and Jimmy (Suzanne) Cheek of Brentwood; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Cothron, Jean Cothron, Penny Cothron, and Eunice Pullen; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy Cheatham, Charlotte Lansdowne, Virginia Barnes, Peggy Sue Ballard, and Melba Jean Bowers; brothers, Nolan Cothron, Leland Cothron, Dorris Cothron, Raymond Cothron, and Billy Joe Cothron. Mrs. Cheek's grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of Life Care of Columbia where she made her home since December, 2005.
