Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00-2:00 pm. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to your local humane society. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born March 14, 1938 in Columbia, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Joe Brunner Kelly and Frannie McClure Kelly. She was married to Thomas Jerry Dawson who preceded her in death on July 2, 1985. She was a 1956 graduate of Columbia Central High School. Mrs. Dawson had made her home in Nashville for several years before relocating to Birmingham, Alabama. She retired from Royal-Globe Insurance after 30 years. She will be remembered as a wonderful mother and "Gan Gan" that loved everyone, especially her family and pet dog, Zack. Survivors include her two daughters; Jerre Lynn Dawson Wright Carnes of Gadsden, Alabama and Kimberly Jo Dawson of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, George Wright V, Shannah Carnes (Jason) Smiley, Chad Carnes, and Kinsley Carnes; great grandchildren, George Wright VI and Cayden Wright; nieces, Linda Gemmell and Donna (Steve) Oliver. She leaves behind her companion and special friend of 27 years, Frank Burton Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Kelly Cowherd and Mattie Potts; and five brothers, Howard Kelly, Herman Kelly, Frazier Kelly, Carl Kelly, and Huey Kelly. Pallbearers will be George Wright V, George Wright VI, Chad Carnes, Jason Smiley, Rick Carnes, and Semaj Gibbs. The family would like to express a special thank you to the nurses of ICU and CCU of Brookwood Medical Hospital.
