Jewell was born December 31, 1929 in Southport as the only child of Lula Hickman Horne and Austin “Cap” Horne. She graduated in 1948 from Columbia Central High School. She attended Pleasant Mount Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed helping with various activities.
Jewell was a strong, hard-working Southern woman who was “the salt of the earth.” She was predeceased by her husband, the love of her life of 45 years, William Granville “Billy” Dean 31 years ago in 1994. Earlier in life, she was a bookkeeper for Kaufman’s Dress Shop. She loved helping “Bill” on the farm, growing flowers, playing Rook on Saturday nights with friends and family, playing with her dog, knitting and doing anything she could to help others.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law Thomas Jefferson Ashton, William Aaron Inman, Jr., Henry Clay Graham, Waylan Cheek Dean, Norman Franklin Dean and sisters-in-law, Norma Lee Anderson Ashton, Doris Ashton Inman, Ann Dean Graham, Joan Potts Dean and Amelia Parks Dean.
She is survived by her cousins, whom she loved dearly, George Horne, Effie Horne Lovett, Joe Horne, Karen and Barry Minton, of Columbia, Floy May Sealy Brandon, Lewisburg, and Barry Horne of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Her surviving nieces and nephews are Thomas (Nedra) Ashton, Houston, TX, Tim Ashton, Denham Springs, LA; David (Susan) Ashton, Austin, TX; Brenda Graham McGrath, Knoxville; Teresa Dean, Columbia; Ken (Rowena) Graham, Lisa Dean, Chuck (Tracy) Dean, all of Franklin, and Allison Dean Love (Phil) of Columbia, SC. She was preceded in death by nephews, Douglas Dean and Eddie Inman.
