Jewell Newborn Smith

View Video Tribute View Funeral Service Webcast Mrs. Jewell Newborn Smith, 90, resident of Edenburg Drive, died Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with John Vaughan and Jack Malone officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 12:00 noon at Ridgecrest Cemetery in Jackson, Tennessee. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Cairo, Mississippi native was the daughter of the late Rutherford B. Hayes Newborn and Rosia Leigh Wheeler Newborn. In 1943 she married Charles P. "C.P." Smith, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1985. She was employed for 40 years at F.W. Woolworth in Jackson where she retired in 1987. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Graymere Church of Christ where she worked with the Graymere Outreach Center and was a member of the Graymere Senior Saints. Survivors include a son, Charles P. (Jewel) Smith of Columbia; two grandchildren, Marty (Robin) Smith of Centerville, Chris Smith of Columbia; two great-grandchildren, Madison Smith, Lincoln Smith; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Mae Lambert and three brothers, Marvin Newborn, Charlie Newborn and Roy Newborn. Active pallbearers will be Buddy Voss, Butch Shrader, C.P. "Buddy" Rogers, Bill Glenn, Kernie Timmons, Royal Dickson and Dr. Ken Young. Honorary pallbearers will be the Graymere Senior Saints. The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Paul Perryman, Dr. Ben Gardner, Dr. Frederick Wade, Dr. Doug Wilburn, Life Care Center Staff, 3rd Floor Oncology Unit, Maury Regional Medical Center, Pastoral Care Department and Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.
