View Funeral Webcast Joan Hickman Johns, 81, life-long resident of Columbia, died Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Dr. Carl Duck and Rev. Rick Elsey officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggest memorials to Joy Sunday School Class at West End Baptist Church, 900 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401 or American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 1864, Columbia 38402. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Herman Hickman and Minnie Woody Hickman. She was a 1947 graduate of Columbia Central High School and served as Class Secretary. As a young lady she worked for South Central Bell Telephone Company and Tennessee Farm Bureau. Mrs. Johns was a charter member of West End Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. Survivors include her husband of sixty years, Cecil Johns of Columbia; daughter, Jennifer Johns; son, Doug (Yvette) Johns; granddaughter, Alexi Johns, all of Columbia; nephews, Phillip Page of Columbia and Bill Page of Waldorf, Maryland. Active pallbearers are Bill Page, Phil Page, Lawrence Johns, Jim Borum, David Wise, and Virgil Moore. Honorary pallbearers include the 1947 Class of Central High School and the Joy Sunday School Class at West End Baptist Church.
