John Henry "JH" Johnson

John Henry "J. H." Johnson, 91, retired farmer and long-time resident of Stephens Road in the Sawdust Community, died Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Calvin Lunn officiating. Burial will follow in Neapolis Cemetery with military honors at graveside provided by the U. S. Marine Corps Honor Guard and Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was son of the late Dave Johnson and Beulah Cammuse Johnson. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. In early 1942 he was assigned to duty in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Later in the year, he shipped to the Southwest Pacific Theatre of Operation and participated in the seizure of Guadalcanal, Rendova Island and occupation and defense of New Georgia in the Solomon Islands. His last assignment was in Balboa, Panama Canal Zone in 1945. He attended Spring Hill schools and in 2002, along with other World War II Veterans who volunteered prior to graduation, received his high school diploma. He was a member of Chapter 22 of Disabled American Veterans and Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. In addition to farming all his life, Mr. Johnson worked at Union Carbide Corporation from 1959 to 1968. He was a long-time member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church. November 3, 1944 he married the former Lucille Parks who preceded him in death March 7, 1993. Survivors include daughters, Linda (Johnny) Lasley of Gallatin, Mary Jo (Turner) Jones and Wanda (Larry) Lane of Columbia; brother, Thomas E. (Glenna) Johnson of Spring Hill; sister, Winnie Russell of Columbia; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Verna Mae Brown. Active pallbearers are Draa Jones, Jason Jones, Craig Mullins, Reed Mullins, Jay Lasley, Greg Gregory, Larry Brown, and Randall Scott. Honorary pallbearers include family and friends on Brown Hollow Road and Stephens Road, and members of Chapter 22, Disabled American Veterans. The family wishes to express a special acknowlegement of appreciation to NHC Hillview for their kindness and compassionate care.
