View Funeral WebcastJohn Douglas "Doug" Jones, 56, retired laboratory technician for Spontex Corporation, former employee of Monsanto Company, and resident of Sewanee Circle, died Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Jimmy Peyton officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Columbia Academy,1101 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Lawrence County native was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and member of the Ridge Top Hunting Club. He also coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams for several years and volunteered his talents for maintenance and re-conditioning of the Columbia Academy baseball and football fields. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Vickie Crews Jones, whom he married June 7, 1974; sons, Ben (Jill) Jones and Brett (Janean) Jones, both of Columbia; his parents, John William and Mary Lois Robinson Jones of Columbia; grandchildren, Jax Jones and Kennedy Jones; sisters, Gail (Ray) McCain of Mt. Pleasant and Connie (Richard) Cathey of Tullahoma; mother-in-law, Joan Crews Hermsdorfer of Sandy Hook; brother-in-law, Phillip (Ann) Crews of Sandy Hook; nieces, Andrea (Jimmy) Peyton of Cullman, Alabama, Christy (John) Langford of Mt. Pleasant, and Mary (Roger) Hay of Summertown. Active pallbearers are Sonny Shackelford, Mike Reid, Dean Sewell, Jimmy Turner, Bobby Call, and Tony Senter. Honorary pallbearers include Tony Edwards, Junior Roberts, and co-workers at Spontex Corporation.
