Mr. John Evan Stoops, 60, died Sunday, November 2, 2014 at his residence on Perkins Lane. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Bro. Randy Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery in Hickman County. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Stoops, Sr. of Columbia and the late Dorothy Lorraine Cayce Stoops and was a 1972 graduate of Columbia Central High School. He was employed by Geo Services in Lebanon and loved his work as a construction inspector specializing in airport and runway construction. John loved Mt. Pleasant High School sports and was considered the loudest fan at football games. He was a huge UT football fan and loved St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He enjoyed swimming and taught all his children how to swim, some even before they could walk. He attended Zion Presbyterian Church. In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Deborah Cathey Stoops of Columbia, whom he married April 4, 1981; daughter, Jennifer Stoops (Jonathan) Potts of Mt. Pleasant; sons, Joshua Evan (Hollie) Stoops, Jay Phillip Stoops and Justin Tyler Stoops all of Columbia; grandchildren, Korbyn Lea Stoops, Ethan Cole Beasley both of Mt. Pleasant, Trinity Leigh Stoops and Tristin Robert Stoops both of Columbia; sister, Peggy Taylor of Columbia; and brothers, Buddy (Elaine) Stoops of Temple, Georgia and Mike (Rebecca) Stoops of Lake Zurich, Illinois. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert M. Stoops, Jr. Active pallbearers will be Craig Hooks, Brad Coppes, Don Gilcrest, Jonathan Potts, Billy Cathey and Bobby Cathey. Honorary pallbearers include Randy Gobbel, Rick Auten and employees of Geo Services.
