View Funeral WebcastJosephine Jackson Hewgley Holmes, 83, former Knoxville resident, died Sunday, August 9, 2009 in Newburgh, Indiana. The family will visit with friends Saturday, August 15th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Columbia. Rev. Bill Williamson will lead a Celebration of Life service immediately following at the church, followed by burial in Polk Memorial Gardens. Serving as active pallbearers are her grandchildren, Charles Basler, III; Andy Basler, Kathryn Carter, Jamie Wright Evan Hewgley, Hannah Haslam, and long-time family friend, Walter Spears. Honorary Pallbearers include Burt Hewgley, Don Freeman, Bill Hewgley, John Hewgley, Sam Hoye, Buddy Hewgley, Rev. Ricky Hewgley, Bill Jackson, and John Jackson. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.Affectionately known by family and friends as "Phinie," she was born January 29, 1926 in Columbia and grew up surrounded by small town friends and family. Music played a large part in her life - her mother was the organist and her husband, Tom Hewgley, was the choir director at Garden Street Presbyterian Church in Columbia. Her husband, Tom, was the Director of the Columbia Central High School Band for a number of years, during which time she was a member of the Band and head Majorette. Following their marriage, she continued to teach the majorettes at CHS. Phinie and Tom operated Hewgley's Music Shop, first as partners with his brother, Jim Hewgley, in Columbia from 1946-1961 and then the Knoxville store from 1961-1988. Her second husband, John Homes, enjoyed classical music and was an excellent tenor church choir member and soloist. A life-long Presbyterian, Josephine grew up, married, and reared her children in the Garden Street Presbyterian Church in Columbia. In 1961, the family moved to Knoxville and joined Erin Presbyterian Church. In 1992, she and her husband, John Holmes, joined St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, in their new home, Sun City Center, Florida.Survivors include her sister, Martha Jackson, "Bitty" Crozier, Columbia; sisters-in-law, Jean Hewgley, Columbia; Virgie Hewgley, Madison, Ama Delle Hewgley, Old Hickory; her children, Robert Jackson Hewgley, Knoxville, Rev. Elizabeth Gay Wright (Gregg) Newburgh, Indiana; Melinda Basler (Charles), Knoxville, and stepson David Holmes (Nancy) Huntsville, Alabama. She was so proud of her grandchildren and attended all the weddings, graduations, and performances over the years for Evan Hewgley (Jennifer) and Hannah Haslam (Will) of Knoxville, Kathryn Carter (Bill) of Peachtree City, Georgia, and Jamie Wright, U.S. Peace Corp/World Vision, South Africa, Charles Basler, III (Terri), Boston, Massachusetts, and Andy Basler (Alice), Maryville; step grandchildren, Elizabeth Moore (Jeff) and Benjamin Holmes, Huntsville, Alabama; and Peter John Holmes, Texas. She lived to enjoy great-grandchildren, K. C. Carter, Peachtree City, Georgia ; Sally and Millie Basler, Boston, and Jack and Violet Ann Basler, Maryville. She is also survived by nieces and their children, Cassandra "Sandy" Lowe of Jamestown; Constance "Connie" Crozier of Lynnville, Suzanne Freemen (Don) of Knoxville (children, Jennifer and Mark), Ida Jayne Hoye (Sam), South Pittsburg (children, Tara and Heather), Janice Hanes, Gallatin; nephews and their children include Thomas H. Peebles, III (Katie), Kingston Springs (children, Paul, Thomas H., IV and Bruce); John Jackson (Joan), Columbia (children, Waverly and Kim); Bill Jackson (Joyce), Columbia (daughter, Beth Anne), and Burt Hewgley (Margaret) Columbia (daughters, Becky, Robyn, and Marina), Bill Hewgley (Jan), Chattanooga (children, Joe and Beth), John Hewgley (Teena), South Pittsburg (children Lissa, Brian and Carter), Charles Wright, Gallatin (children, Karen, Rufus and Susan), Buddy Hewgley (Linda), Ten Mile (children, Chip and Cyndy), Rev. Rick Hewgley (Barbara), Bethpage; and very special friend from their early years growing up in Columbia, Virginia Neely of Nashville.She was preceded in death by her parents Colonel Waverly Hayes Jackson and Alleen Overton Jackson, Miss Annie Pearl Hall; husbands, Thomas B. "Tom" Hewgley, Sr. and John MacDougal Holmes; son, Thomas Bryan Hewgley, Jr.; brother, John Overton Jackson (late wife, Bibs Goslin); sister, Grace Jackson Peebles (late husband, Thomas H. Peebles, Jr.); brothers-in-law, Jim Hewgley and Houston "Big Hoos" Crozier; John Hewgley, Hap Hewgley, Bill Hewgley (late wife, Johnnie Belle) ; sister-in-law, Myra Hanes (Lee), niece Carol Hanes Wright; and nephews, Houston "Buddy" Crozier, Jr. and Clinton Hanes.
