Katie Irene Herston Sneed

Mrs. Katie Irene Herston Sneed, 90, former resident of Myers Avenue and Jackson Heights, died Monday, October 27, 2014 at Signature Health Care. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. David Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 12:00 noon until time of service at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Riverside United Methodist Church Kitchen Fund, P.O. Box 392, Columbia, TN 38402. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Lauderdale County, Alabama native was the fourteenth child of the late David J. Herston and Ella Mitchell Herston. On January 5, 1941 she married John Odell "Toby" Sneed who preceded her in death on January 31, 2007. Mrs. Sneed was employed by the City of Columbia as a dispatcher in the Police Department and retired as a Record Clerk. She enjoyed sewing and was a wonderful cook fulfilling her lifelong dream of owning her own restaurant when she opened "Katie's". Mrs. Sneed was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church where she was active in the Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Kitchen Committee. Survivors include her sons, Ronald L. (Mary) Sneed of Columbia, Larry W. Sneed (Katerina Harrington) of Nashville, David Jackson "Jack" (Jane) Sneed of Franklin; grandchildren, Katie Sneed of Franklin, Tyler (Kate) Sneed and Corey Sneed (Daniel Ramser) both of Columbia; sister-in-law, Christine Barlar of Mt. Pleasant; brothers-in-law, Bobby (Joy) Sneed of Nashville, Donald (Dottie) Sneed of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her thirteen brothers and sisters. Active pallbearers will be Tyler Sneed, Corey Sneed, Mike Sweeney, Todd Sneed, Kevin Hight and Jim Herston. Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Gaylon Harris, Faye Hartsfield, Ray Messick, members of Riverside United Methodist Church Fellowship Sunday School Class and retired employees of the Columbia Police Department. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Poplar Estates and to the caregivers and nurses of Signature Health Care Southeast Hall and Rehab unit.
