View Video TributeView Funeral Webcast Larry Dale Duvall, 67, Maury County educator and resident of Old Sunnyside Lane, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 7:00 P.M. at Riverside United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Newell and Rev. David Spencer officiating. The family will visit with friends Monday from 2:00 - 4:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and from 6:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the church. A private family interment will be held at Polk Memorial Gardens. The family suggests memorials to Riverside United Methodist Church or Riverside United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, P. O. The Maury County native was the son of the late Paul Dean Duvall and Margaret Alberta Chunn Duvall. He was a 1962 graduate of Spring Hill High School and attended University of Tennessee from September 1962 - June 1965 with a Major in Agriculture Education. He then attended Middle Tennessee State University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1972, Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision in 1973 and in 1987 earned 30 hours beyond a Masters from Middle Tennessee State University. In December 2002, he earned certification in Special Education from Tennessee State University.Mr. Duvall began his forty-six year career as an educator with Maury County Public Schools in July 1965 as an Elementary teacher/coach at Hampshire Unit School. From 1973 through 1981, he served as Principal at Hampshire Unit School, and from 1981 through 1992, he served as Principal at McDowell Elementary School. From August 1992 through August 1995, he served as a State Evaluator for the Career Ladder Program. In August 1995, Mr. Duvall retired from Maury County Public Schools. After retirement in Tennessee, Mr. Duvall took a position in Brewton, Alabama as Principal of Brewton Elementary School from 1995 to 1998. In July 2000, Mr. Duvall returned to the Maury County Public Schools System under special retiree contract working with the special Education Department at Horace O. Porter School at College Hill through May 2009. From July 2009 until his passing he served as a system-wide Facilitating Teacher for Maury County Public Schools. Mr. Duvall had a special gift for working with children with special needs. A talented musician, Mr. Duvall was a member of The Haymakers, a bluegrass band, for several years and had emceed at the Summertown Bluegrass Festival. He had played on several church league baseball teams and coached city league girls' basketball. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking, but his greatest joy was playing, reading and birdwatching with his granddaughter. Mr. Duvall was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church where he sang in the Choir. He had served as a part-time United Methodist pastor in the Columbia District for a few years. Survivors include his wife, Carol Louise Jones Duvall whom he married June 19, 1970; two sons, Richard Scott (Rachel) Duvall of Columbia; David Paul (Amanda) Duvall of Evansville, Indiana; two brothers, Joe (Jean) Duvall of Columbia; Leonard Duvall of Rally Hill Community; two sisters, Dorothy Murphy of Spring Hill; Bonnie Williams of Alabama; granddaughter, Ella Grace Duvall of Columbia; brother-in-law, Richard (Raina) Jones, Jr. of St. Petersburg, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, James "Buddy" Duvall. Active pallbearers will be Steve Cross, Tim Liter, Freddy Murphy, Tony Brown, Billy Glen Wright, Larry Derryberry, Bill Pogue, and Eddie Hickman. Honorary pallbearers will be Special Education Facilitators and Staff and members of Riverside United Methodist Church Chancel Choir.
