View Video TributeView Funeral Webcast Mrs. Lorene Beasley Underwood, 88, former Secretary/Treasurer at Craft Memorial United Methodist Church and longtime resident of Columbia, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, Labor Day, September 2, 2013 at Craft Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeff Jacob officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 - 6:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born July 7, 1925 in Aspen Hill, Tennessee, she was one of eight children of the late E. Gray and Lorene Beasley. On July 2, 1949, she married James Allen Underwood Sr. who preceded her in death. She was one of three Salutatorians at Giles County High School in 1942 and graduated from Columbia Business School. Mrs. Underwood was a longtime Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, active in the Maury County Arts Guild where she participated in the Trees of Christmas exhibition along with good friend Donna Gibson, and winner of twenty-five first place blue ribbons, and many second and third place for sewing and canning at the Maury County Fair. She also worked at Weather Tamer in Columbia as a seamstress for eleven years. She was a member of Craft Memorial United Methodist Church and Eastern Star, Chapter 287. Mrs. Underwood was a mother of four and mother figure to many many others. Survivors include three sons, James Allen Underwood, Jr., Richard Clay Underwood (Michael Parkman), Michael Kenneth (Gina) Underwood; sister, Anita (Bob) Ramsey; brother, William (Linda) Beasley; three grandchildren, Lisa (Erick) Segarra, Yolanda Underwood, and Michael Underwood, Jr.; two great grandchildren, Katelyn Segarra and Allison Segarra; sister-in-law, Mildred Beasley; brother-in-law, Robert Harris; friends and neighbors, Billy & Juanita Lee. She was preceded in death by one son, Emmett Gray Underwood; siblings, Connie Guschke, Gray Beasley, Mary Demastus, Sara Harris, Nancy Gertschen; and many friends. We celebrate and give thanks for the life of a wonderful woman who was a blessing and inspiration to all who knew her.
