Louise Maddux Rayburn, wife of the late Judge Taylor Rayburn, Sr., passed away on October 5, 2010 surrounded by her loving family and caregivers. Born July 15, 1915 in Bon Air, Tennessee she was the daughter of the late Ralph Guest Maddux and Beulah Mae Roddy Maddux. The family moved to Columbia from Chattanooga when she was thirteen years old and she graduated from Columbia High School in 1933. She won many tennis trophies and was ladies champion of Maury County on several occasions. She was an avid Bridge player earning Master's level. She played often and made many good friends while pursuing this interest. Her husband, Judge Rayburn, was a kinsman of Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the House of Representatives and better known as "Mr. Democrat." They visited "Mr. Sam" in Washington on several occasions and "Mr. Sam" visited his Columbia relatives at the Memorial Building in October 1960. She and Judge Rayburn also had the honor of meeting with President Jimmy Carter in the Oval Office of the White House while Judge Rayburn was in Washington on behalf of the Columbia Dam. She was a member of the APTA and the James K. Polk Association and numerous other charitable organizations. She worked tirelessly for fundraising events for the Catholic Church and lived to see the church progress from meeting in an old house on North High St. to the present beautiful building on Cayce Lane. She was a loving mother of her only two children, Dr. Taylor (Connie) Rayburn, Jr. and Mary Claire (Everett) Holzapfel and she was greatly loved and admired by them.
