Mary Madelyn Waldrop Gaines, 100, former long-time resident of Woldridge Drive, died Friday, July 6, 2012 in McClean, Virginia where she made her home the past nineteen years. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Churchyard with The Rev. Richard Zalesak officiating. The family will visit with friends at graveside. The family suggests memorials to Maury County Public Library, 211 West 8th Street, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be offered at oakesanichols.com. A native of Haile, Louisiana, she was the daughter of the late John M. Waldrop and Madeline Love Waldrop. April 1, 1941, she married Lt. Col. James B. Gaines of Columbia. During Col. Gaines military service, she and their daughter lived in various parts of the world where he was stationed, including Japan and Tripoli, Libya. All the while, they maintained their residence in Columbia and returned here after his retirement. Their fifty year marriage ended with his death May 29, 1991. She taught school a total of thirteen years in Louisiana, Virginia, and McDowell Elementary School in Columbia. An accomplished pianist and canvass artist, Mrs. Gaines enjoyed needlework and other sewing techniques. She was a member of Maury County Garden Club for many years and loved flower gardening and arranging. A member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, she was also an amateur genealogist. She was a long-time communicant of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Judith "Judi" Gaines (George Richard) Thompson of Cabin John, Maryland; a niece, Patricia Rhinesmith of LaFayette, California; and nephew, Terry D. Waldrop of Mansfield, Texas. She was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements
