Mae Ledbetter Duncan, 87, former longtime resident of Country Club Lane died Monday, February 13, 2012 at NHC Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Aleridge, Rev. Melinda Britt and Rev. Jeff Jacob officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Thursday in the church atrium from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. A native of Marshall County she was the daughter of the late Ernest Joyce Ledbetter and Lillie Ellen Powell Ledbetter. Her family moved to Columbia in 1925, the year she was born. She was retired from Weather Tamer where she had been Director of Human Resources. Mrs. Duncan was active in civic affairs and political affairs and was very active in her church. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church where she served as communion steward for thirty years. She was President of the United Methodist Women and a delegate to the United Methodist District Conference for many years. She served on the board of Harvest Share and was an honored life member of the Girl Scouts of America. A prayer garden was built in the front yard of the First United Methodist Church by Matthew Hamilton as his Eagle Scout project in honor of Mrs. Duncan and dedicated in 2007. Survivors include her daughter, Carol (Billy) Cage of Nashville; grandchildren, Dr. Robert C. Derryberry, III of Gainesville, Florida, Cory Cage and Doug Cage both of Nashville; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clark Duncan; brothers, Marshall P. Ledbetter, Sr., Bill Ledbetter, Ernest Joyce (J.W.) Ledbetter, Harold Ledbetter, Paul Ledbetter and Gene Ledbetter; sister, Louella Hardison Moore; a grandson, Clark Derryberry and nephew, Marshall P. Ledbetter, Jr. Active pallbearers will be Sheriff Enoch George, Gene Barr, James Barr, Ashley Brown, Powell Ledbetter, and Joe Pearson. Honorary pallbearers include her church family and members of the Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church.
