View Funeral WebcastMrs. Mae Carlton Sands, 90, retired nurse and resident of Pickens Lane, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Life Care of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Jeremy Butt officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Perry County native was the daughter of the late William Carlton and Beulah Rainey Carlton. She was a graduate of Perry County High School and a 1945 graduate of King's Daughters Nursing School. She worked at King's Daughters until Maury County Hospital was opened. She helped set up the new hospital and was one of the hostesses on Dedication Day to welcome over 15,000 guests. Mrs. Sands was head of Labor and Delivery at Maury County Hospital at her retirement. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include a nephew, Johnny Fred Carlton of Dayton; niece, Carolyn Gregrerio of the Phillippines; two great nieces, Reba Byrd and Wenona Stark both of Lobelville; great nephew, Yancey Carlton of Lobelville; great-great niece, Mandy Byrd; several other nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Pallbearers will be Marty Byrd, David Stark, Yancey Carlton, Johnny Carlton, Raymond Sands and Eddie Stewart.
