View Memorial WebcastMalcolm Glenn West, Sr., 71, well-known Columbia businessman, died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at his residence on Dark's Mill Road. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Roger Nicholson, minister of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 801 South High Street, Columbia 38401 or Maury County Public Library, 211 West 8th Street, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born in Maury County, he was the son of the late Malcolm Campbell West and Grace Greenfield West Whitt. He was a graduate of West End High School in Nashville and attended David Lipscomb College and Middle Tennessee State University. As a young man, he began work with his father's company, M. C. West Construction Company. Involved in all aspects of the business, over the years his responsibilities increased and in the early 1980s he assumed ownership of the company. Additionally, he was co-founder of General Trucking Company in the early 1960s with James Hoil Walker. Actively involved in the construction and allied industries, he served as President of the Crushed Stone Association, President of Tennessee Road Builders'Association, President of Tennessee Asphalt Pavement Association, and was a member of the American Road Builders' Association. His local civic activities included membership in the Noon Rotary Club and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Columbia Military Academy. Survivors include his wife, Ann Lightfoot West; daughters, Elizabeth (Ken) Crouch and Joanna (Kevin) Dransfield; son, Malcolm G. "Butch" (Julia) West; grandchildren, Evin Dransfield, Sarah Crouch, Carter West, Campbell West, Katie Dransfield, and Lawson Crouch, all of Columbia; a sister, Lou Etta West Toler of San Jose, California; and a niece, Jennifer Taillie Alvarez of San Jose, California.
