Mrs. Marie Burns Cox, 87, former resident of Prescott Road in Nashville, died Monday, April 21, 2014 at Hickory Woods Life Care Center in Antioch. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Jack White officiating. Burial will follow in Jones Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Central Christian Church, 701 Bear Creek Pike, Columbia, TN 38401. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late John B. Burns, Sr. and Rebecca Mae Eskew Burns. In 1946 she married John R. Cox who preceded her in death in 1985. Mrs. Cox was a homemaker and a former employee of the Ford Glass Plant. She was a member of First Christian Church in Nashville and later transferred her membership to Central Christian Church in Columbia. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Tracey Cox of Nashville; step-daughters, June Cox Williams and Marnie Cox Pewitt both of Thompson's Station; four sisters, Catherine Choate, Jean (Billy) Crowe, Margret B. Billington, Linda Brown all of Columbia; brothers, Robert H. Burns, William (Marjorie) Burns both of Columbia; four step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John B. Burns, Jr. and James E. Burns and a sister, Dorothy Elizabeth Parsley. Active pallbearers will be Bill Parsley, Tommy Parsley, David Young, Jimmy Pewitt, John Pewitt and Brantley Pewitt. Honorary pallbearers include Phil Riner, Sr. and her nephews.
