Martha Rai Cothran Sharp, 86 care giver to her brother and resident of Mt. Pleasant, TN passed away on Wednesday, July 24th, 2024 at Mt. Pleasant Health and Rehab.
Born January 10th, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Willie N. Cothran Sr., and the late Gladys Pearl Roberts Cothran. Martha Rai, lovingly known as “Mott” was raised on a family farm along with her eleven siblings. She was the second oldest of 8 girls and 6 boys. Mott had no biological children of her own but was like a mother to many, especially her nephew Mark Filson and his two sons Zac and Corvin. Mott exemplified the characteristics of love, kindness, caring, forgiving, generosity, patience, toughness, and joy. She enjoyed watching baseball, playing solitaire and tonk card games held during family gatherings, listening to country music, and chewing tobacco. She loved having company and cooking for them at her home. She was a great cook and loved cooking family meals during holiday gatherings. She worked many different jobs throughout her lifetime such as farmhand striping tobacco, cook, and factory worker at Lasko and Kasbar. For the past twenty-four years she was the primary care giver to her brother Jeffery Mark Cothran.
She is survived by her sisters Linda Rhodes of New Johnsonville, TN, Velda Filson of Columbia, TN, and Helen Bell; brother, Jeffery Cothran of Mt. Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by brothers, Willie Cothran Jr., Lewis Cothran Sr., Robert Cothran, Neal Cothran, Johnny Walker Cothran; and sisters, Mildred Kelley, Joyce Ann Craig, Mary Cothran, and Betty Dyer.
Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday July 28th, 2024, 3p.m. at Cross Bridges Cemetery, Cross Bridges, TN. Condolences may be extended online at www.oaksandnichols.com
