View Funeral WebcastMrs. Martha Evelyn West Jones, 97, homemaker and former resident of Transit Avenue, went to be with her Lord on January 7, 2010 at NHC Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Troy Dugger officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Frank Edward West, Sr. and Regina Hester West. On January 14, 1940 she married Cleveland Jones who preceded her in death on February 2, 1975. Mrs. Jones resided in the Columbia area for most of her life, attended school in Columbia and worked in the local garment industry prior to marriage. During her 97+ years she witnessed the United States grow from 46 to 50 states and saw bi-planes to spaceships and men walk on the moon. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was loyal and devoted to family and friends, and her feet were firmly planted on a solid foundation of faith, integrity, independence and pride. Mrs. Jones spent her last active years tending to her flower garden, feeding her birds and visiting with family and friends. She especially liked to cook for family during holidays and special occasions. She was a member of West Seventh Street Church of Christ. Survivors include two sons, Joseph R. "Joe" (Mary) West of Haines City, Florida; William Edward "Bill" (Gayle) Jones of Birmingham, Alabama; two daughters, Martha Jean (Jack L.) Fleming of Nashville; Sandra K. (Sloan) Cochran of Duck River; one sister, Catherine R. Gilliam of Columbia; nine grandchildren, Randy West, Dewanna Moore, Diana Martin, Kristy Moore, Allan Jones, Vicky Biggs, Dee Dee Ohde, Charles Cochran, Chris Cochran; fourteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many friends. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Moody Hester West, Frank E. West, Jr., and William Charles "Bungle" West. Pallbearers will be Chris Cochran, Charles Cochran, Randy West, Steve Moore, Al Jones, and Brian Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Thomas Dake, Dr. Ben Gardner, Dr. Cummins Couch, and nurses and staff at NHC Hillview.
