Martha V "Mattyvee" Lewis

Mrs. Martha Virginia "Mattyvee" Spencer Lewis, 95, former resident of Rolling Fields Circle and Poplar Estates, died Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at Florence Nursing & Rehab Center in Florence, Alabama. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 12:00 noon at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Ted Burleson, Mike Kesler, Jeremy Butt, and Jerry Elder officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday after 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to West Seventh Street Church of Christ, 405 West Seventh Street, Columbia, TN 38401 or Rose Hill Cemetery, P. O. Box 1015, Columbia, TN 38402. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born April 12, 1919 in Columbia, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late George Monroe Spencer and Hattie Victoria Holt Spencer. On December 25, 1937 she married Edward E. Lewis who preceded her in death on January 21, 2006. Mattyvee attended Andrews Elementary School, Junior High and Central High School. She was valedictorian of the 1936 Senior Class and received her piano certificate at the same time after giving her piano recital, the final requirement for a piano certificate. She furthered the study of piano with the noted teacher Lawrence Goodman, former head of the Ward Belmont Conservatory Piano Department in Nashville. Mrs. Lewis was an accomplished pianist, organist and accordionist, entertainer for civic clubs, wedding organist and accompanist for vocalists during high school years and later. She was a teacher on all three instruments and taught hundreds all over Maury County for sixty-three years until her retirement at age eighty. She was a member of West Seventh Street Church of Christ since age twelve, where she was very active and taught Sunday School for many years. Survivors include twin grandsons, Edward "Eddie" Scivally (Kim) Lewis and Terry Spencer (Allison) Lewis and great grandson, D. J. Holden, all of Florence, Alabama; niece, Eugenia Marie "Genie" Spencer (Jerry)Vaughn of Glasgow, Virginia; and several cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, only child, Terry Edward Lewis; daughter-in-law, Gayle Scivally Lewis; and brother, George Eugene "Gene" Spencer; and sister-in-law, Stella Marie "Missy" Spencer. Active pallbearers will be J. B. Long, Dr. Kenneth F. Galloway, Jimmy Black, Robert Collins, Jerry Walker, Scott Burt, Keith Romine, Dr. David Foster, Joe R. Foster, Glenn Truelove, Shane Bradford, and Tony Sowell. Honorary pallbearers will include Vernon Pruitt, friends, former music pupils, Elders, Deacons and members of West Seventh Street Church of Christ, past and present neighbors, Dr. John Simmons, and staff of Oakes & Nichols.
