View Funeral Webcast Mrs. Mary Sue Nelson Pennington, 97, died Friday, July 18, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Chip Hunter and Rev. Melinda Britt officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 12 noon until time of service at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Orange Grove Center, 615 Derby St., Chattanooga, Tennessee 37404 . Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Giles County native was the daughter of the late John Lee Nelson and Osie Baker Nelson. On March 21, 1957 she married Edward Custer Pennington who preceded her in death September 20, 1985. Mrs. Pennington was a 1935 graduate of Central High School. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University and a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She was employed by the State of Tennessee for thirty five years as a regional manager in the social services department. During WWII she worked for the Red Cross in the Philippines and in Europe.She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include nieces, Nancy Nelson (Andy) Wyszynski of Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, Martha Ann Nelson of Norfolk, Virginia, Nancy (Eric) Edmondson of Atlanta, Georgia, Susan Dyer of Auburn, Alabama; nephews, Jim (Pam) Nelson of Virginia, Bill Nelson of Norfolk, Virginia; great nieces and nephews, Lindsey (Tyler) Rossin, Whitney Wyszynski, Natalie (Patrick) Turk, Kelley (Troy) Bronsink, Andy (Janice) Dyer, Ben (Lauren) Dyer, Sara (Eric) Brolley, Lee (Jessica) Nelson, Baker (Suzanne) Nelson; and sister-in-law, Alene Wakefield of Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James L. Nelson and Lindsey Nelson and a niece, Sharon Nelson and nephew, Jack Nelson. Pallbearers will be Jerry Colley, Davis Broadway, Jim Nelson, Bill Nelson, Patrick Turk and Tyler Rossin.
