Mr. James B. "Doodle" Hughes, Sr., 76, retired employee of Occidental and resident of Hilltop Drive, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Sherwood officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Williamson County native was the son of the late Hillie Arthur Hughes, Sr. and Trula Brown Hughes. He was a 1953 graduate of Columbia Central High School. Mr. Hughes served three years in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1953 until 1956. He was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 and was an avid fisherman, hunter and coin collector. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Marcia White Hughes of Columbia; three children Michael E. (Kristy) Hughes of Mansfield, Texas, Paula R. Smithson of Rockvale, James B. (Tracy) Hughes, Jr. of Spring Hill; sister Nellie London of Hohenwald; and five grandchildren Lucas M. Smithson, Whitney N. Hughes, Cayce L. Smithson, Jessica B. Hughes and Erin M. Hughes. He was preceded in death by one brother, Hillie Hughes, Jr. Pallbearers will be Michael E. Hughes, James B. Hughes, Jr., Lucas M. Smithson, Jim Smithson, Ronnie Goins and Keith Redd. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Lindsey, Occidental Retirees and his fishing and hunting buddies.
