Mr. John Woodson McCollum, Jr. 87, resident of Cliff White Road, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center.The family will visit with friends Friday, February 25 from 4 - 8 p.m. and Saturday from 2 - 5p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. The body will then be conveyed to Kuttawa, Kentucky for a Masonic graveside service at 2p.m. Saturday, March 5. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Kuttawa, Kentucky he was the son of the late John W. McCollum and Charline Taylor McCollum. He was a graduate of Kuttawa High School and was a Navy SeaBee during WWII. Mr. McCollum was a welder with the Ironworker's Union 492 and a former member of the Union's Executive Board. Because of his job expertise he was sent to Oakland, California following the 1989 earthquake to help in dismanteling damaged steel and iron. He was an expert mason who enjoyed building rock walls and was a member of the NRA. He was a 32nd degree mason and a member of Suwanee Lodge # 190 for 67 years. Mr. McCollum was widely regarded as a friend to everyone throughout his lifetime. He is survived by a daughter Marta Brown of White House; two sons, John W. McCollum, III of Harrison, Walter B. (Mae) McCollum of Petersburg; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lee (Kay) McCollum of Kuttawa, KY. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter "Gip" McCollum.
