Bettye Duncan Howell, 100, resident of Lynnwood Drive, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Stan Breeden officiating. Burial will follow in McCain's Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 4205 Hillsboro Pike, Suite 216, Nashville, TN 37215. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Waco, Texas she was the daughter of the late William Riley Duncan and Mary Elizabeth Prince Duncan. On November 18, 1933 she married Irvine Stanley Howell who preceded her in death on September 26, 1975. Mrs. Howell was co-owner of Howell Venetian Blind & Awning Company and later retired from Parks-Belk fabric and drapery department. She was a former Major of Maury County Civil Air Patrol and a former member of Columbia Professional and Business Women's Association. She was a musician playing both the piano and accordian and was very artistic. Mrs. Howell was a member of Highland Church of Christ. Survivors include her son, William R. "Bill" (Cheryl) Howell of Columbia; two granddaughters, Melissa Howell (Mark) White and Belinda Howell Dunavant both of Columbia; four great-grandchildren, Cody Dunavant, Jessica Dunavant, Bethany (Josh) Lowry and Stephanie Reeves; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by twelve brothers and sisters. Pallbearers will be Ashley Brown, D.C. Uzzell, Donnie Burchell, Bill McCord, Jerry Corvin, Tyler Luna and Tommy Hight. The family offers special thanks to her caregivers, Jennifer Foster, Carrie Whitehead, Dr. Indu Bali, the medical staff of CCU at Maury Regional Medical Center and the staff of Maury Regional Home Health Care.
