View Funeral WebcastNeil Truman Barnes, 64, retired from Ted's Sporting Goods and resident of Arthur Court, died Monday, February 22, 2010 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Funeral services will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Wendell Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Triune Cemetery in Williamson County. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Marshall County native was the son of the late Fred Coleman Barnes and Iva Lee Brown Barnes and a 1963 graduate of Marshall County High School. He served from 1964 to 1967 in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam era. Prior to his employment at Ted's Sporting Goods, he worked for Porter-Walker Company for several years. An avid sports enthusiast, he loved coaching City League basketball, baseball, and soccer. He was a member of Graymere Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Karen McAlister Barnes of Columbia; son, Christopher Neil (Natasha) Barnes of Murfreesboro; granddaughters, Kristen Lynn Barnes and Lauren Ashley Barnes, both of Murfreesboro; brothers, Dorris Watkins" D.W." Barnes of Morro Bay, California and Earnest Coleman (Peggy) Barnes of Murfreesboro; sisters-in-law, Glendol Andrews Barnes of Murfreesboro and Polly Cheatham Barnes of Lewisburg; brothers-in-law, Leonard Wayne (Pat) McAlister of Newark, Ohio and Thomas Allen (Janet) McAlister of Huntsville, Alabama; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Thomas Brown Barnes and Lee Haynes Barnes. Active pallbearers are Brian McAlister, Richie Simmons, Darrell Duncan, Donald Crabtree, Nathan McRady, and Michael McAlister.
