Mr. Nelson Scott, 69, resident of Hayes Denton Road, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center after a long courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Eddie Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Hickman County native was the son of the late James Wilson Scott and Effie Mae Slaughter Scott. He served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Mt. Katmai. He was retired from Monsanto and Columbia Oil Company. Mr. Scott was a member of Philippi Church of Christ. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruby Brooks Scott of Columbia; three daughters, Patty Scott Thurman of Columbia, Pamela Scott Cunningham of Chapel Hill, Sherry Scott Burns of Old Hickory; son, Joey Nelson (Lea Ann) Scott of Culleoka; four sisters, Elizabeth Burns, Jewell (Pete) Spencer both of Columbia, Pauline Davidson of Theta, Wanda (Harold) Fly of Santa Fe; brother, James (Sandra) Scott of Columbia; mother-in-law, Mary Hann Brooks of Culleoka; six grandchildren, Christopher Head, Adam Thurman, Eric (Cameron) Burns, Amanda Thurman, Jacob Scott, Logan Nicole Scott; and special friends, Lloyd Walters and Robin Tripp. He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Lee Cates. Pallbearers will be Christopher Head, Adam Thurman, Eric Burns, Jacob Scott, Randall Scott and Ronnie Scott. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Johnson and former co-workers at Columbia Oil Co.
