Patrick Steve Compton, 78, a resident of Sunnyside, died Sunday, April 14, 2024, at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, surrounded by his family and friends.  

A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 3:00 PM at St. John’s Churchyard, with Jason Beck officiating and The Reverend Chris Bowhay conducting the graveside service. Steve was an avid sports fan, and the family requested that those attending the service wear casual attire or something representing their favorite sports team. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.  Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with the arrangements, and online condolences may be extended at www.oakesandnichols.com.

Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the Patrick “Steve” Compton ROTC Nursing Scholarship Fund at gofund.me/8b3e7c2b. This fund will honor Steve’s legacy by furthering the education of future nurses in the United States Army.

Steve was born in Columbia on June 8, 1945, to the late Robert Smith Compton and Nora Higgins Compton. He was discharged from the United States Army in 1965 and retired as the deputy chief appraiser from the Montgomery Central Appraisal District in Conroe, Texas.

Steve enjoyed fly fishing, golfing, and playing the guitar. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Tennessee Vols. He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Patrick Stevenson (Nancy) Compton of Spring Hill; three grandchildren, William Compton, Grayson Compton, and Claire Compton; stepdaughter, Kim (Patrick) Hayes of Texas; step grandchildren, Dalton and Brooke; and the mother of his son, Teressa Compton of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Massey and a brother, Robert Compton.
