View Video TributeView Funeral WebcastMrs. Peggy Jane Miller Atkisson, 82, resident of Riverside Drive in Franklin and former long time resident of Newt Hood Road in Columbia, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Williamson Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 12:00 noon at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Brown and Rev. David Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Riverside United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 392, Columbia, TN 38402. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late John O. Miller and Maria Frances Derryberry Miller and was a 1949 graduate of Columbia Central High School. On May 5, 1950 she married HMC Branch Tell "Corky" Atkisson, Jr., USNR (Ret.) who preceded her in death August 14, 2009. She was an active member of Riverside United Methodist Church since 1950 where she served on the Administrative Board, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and served on various other committees. She was very active in the United Methodist Women serving in offices at her local church, Columbia District and Tennessee Conference and was Assistant Dean of the UMW School of Mission at Martin College. Mrs. Atkisson was a Past President and lifetime member of the Riverside Elementary School P.T.A. She had worked for the Maury County Board of Education for seventeen years as a substitute teacher, secretary at Central High School and Teacher's Aid. She was a member and Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve #110 Association in Nashville and was a former part time secretary at Middle Tennessee Armature Works. She was a long time member of the APTA and served on the board as well. She was past President of the Dimple of the Universe Camping Club and had enjoyed camping for many years. For eleven years she was manager of the Top Value Stamp Redemption Center in Columbia. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother survived by son, Ronald "Ron" Douglas (Karen) Atkisson of Brentwood; granddaughter, Stephanie Lynn Mosier of Brentwood; grandson, Branch Tell "B.T." (Jenny) Atkisson, III of Spring Hill; great-grandsons, Jackson Douglas Mosier of Brentwood, Bryson Trussell Atkisson of Spring Hill; great-granddaughter, Laelyn Rose Atkisson of Spring Hill; niece, Wanda Smith (Jim) Duncan of Nashville; nephew, John B. "Johnny" Smith of Columbia; aunt, Ollie Minor of Columbia; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Alexander of Tullahoma. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mable Ann Miller Smith and infant brother, John O. Miller, Jr. Active pallbearers will be Johnny Smith, Skipper Brown, Gerald Martin, Donny Walters, Marvin Davis, Clifton Miller, M.T. Potts and George Woody. Honorary pallbearers include the Fellowship Class of Riverside United Methodist Church, members of the United Methodist Women, and classmates from the Central High School graduating class of 1949.
