View Video TributeMrs. Peggy Ann Hood McEwen, 81, resident of Carol Drive, died Monday, January 2, 2012 at Life Care Center of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Mike Greene, Greg Elrod and Wayne Hardison officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Born in Akron, Ohio and reared in Columbia she was the daughter of the late Charlie A. Hood, Sr. and Bessie Shannon Hood. She was a 1948 graduate of Central High School and a member of the marching band. On June 6, 1953 she married Thomas O. McEwen who preceded her in death November 30, 1991. Mrs. McEwen grew up attending West 7th Street Church of Christ then moved to Riverside/Northview Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for many years. In her earlier career she was employed by Southern Bell but she spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survivors include three sons, Tommy (Peggy) McEwen, Steve McEwen, Jimmy (Delores) McEwen all of Columbia; two sisters-in-law, Theola Oakley Hood and Marian McEwen Alexander; seven grandchildren, Chris (Amanda) McEwen, Mandy (Joey) Mills, Kristie (Brandon) Sullivan, Stevie McEwen, James McEwen, Kami (Billy) Thurman, Neil Webb; twelve great-grandchildren; one aunt, Beulah Shannon Williams of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charlie Hood. Active pallbearers will be Chris McEwen, Stevie McEwen, James McEwen, C.F. Alexander, Bill Alexander, Ricky Hood, Neil Webb, Joey Mills and Brandon Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers will be men of Northview Church of Christ; Eddie Harris, Doug Brown, Wayne Lentz, Warrick Burns and special friends, Maggie Hubbell, Ann Bryant and Janice Brown.
