View Funeral WebcastRev. Elgia Donald Pruitt, 84, Baptist minister and retired employee of Farmers Construction Company, died Sunday, October 4, 2015 at his residence on Haley Lane in Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. William Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, 2200 Children's Way, Nashville, TN 37232. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Walter Pruitt and Laura Blankenship Pruitt. On July 19, 1950 he married the former Lucille Marie Martin and their sixty-four year marriage ended with her death May 12, 2015. He served in the U. S. Navy. Mr. Pruitt had also worked several years for James Walker in General Trucking. He was current pastor of House of Prayer Baptist Church and previously served at Cross Bridges Baptist Church and Taylor's Chapel Baptist Church. He had a passion for gardening, growing many different vegetables, and enjoyed giving to family and friends. He also was a very good cook using old recipes from his mother and grandmother. Mr. Pruitt was very mechanical and enjoyed repairing lawn mowers, vehicles and tractors. Survivors include his daughter, Sherrie (John) Williams of Pulaski; sons, Mike (Melody) Pruitt of Mt. Pleasant, Ronnie (Darlene) Pruitt and Ricky (Shirley) Pruitt, both of Columbia; grandchildren, Marty Pruitt of Nashville, Eddie Pruitt of Atlanta, Georgia, Jeremey (Sarah) Wood of Estill Springs, Angela (Curt) Alsup of Minor Hill, Penny (Will) Green of Columbia, and Elizabeth Dickson of Collinwood; great grandchildren, Madison Alsup, Alexia Wood, Elijah Wood, Harley Grace Alsup, Marshal Alsup, Meagan Green, Hannah Green, Katherine Green; and brothers, Vernon (Eva) Pruitt of Columbia and Arnold (Betty) Pruitt of Williamsport. He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Don Pruitt; and brother, Jimmy Pruitt. Active pallbearers will be John Williams, Wayne Harvey, Len Harvey, Ted Pratt, Curt Alsup, and Al Hickman. Honorary pallbearers will include Birl Ferrell, Allen McCanless, Steve McCanless, Ed Chumley, Allen Elias, and members of House of Prayer Baptist Church.
