View Video TributeRev. Harvel Clifford Stockard, 87, retired Baptist minister and former longtime resident of the Knob Creek Community, died Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Signature Health Care. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. at Knob Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony Muston officiating. His body will be conveyed to Zion Baptist Church in the Factory Creek Community of Wayne County for visitation from 2:00 - 3:00 P.M. followed by a committal service in Gallaher Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Knob Creek Baptist Church, 2054 Knob Creek Road, Columbia, TN 38401, Gallaher Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, c/o Yvonne Bevis, 102 Gravel Hill Road, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464, or Rochelle Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, c/o Ken Sandrell, 951 Sugarland Road, Etheridge, TN 38456. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born November 18, 1926 in Wayne County, he was one of eleven children of the late Clifford Lee Stockard and Ina Lou Ella Lay Stockard. On March 12, 1948, he married Margie Ruth Clayton Stockard who preceded him in death on January 24, 2011. He completed the eighth grade in the small two-room school at Factory Creek, graduating from Wayne County High School in 1945. Most of his life was spent living in the Factory Creek Community where he purchased the family farm on Sweetwater Branch and did part-time farming and worked for Genesco until 1976. Rev. Stockard became a member of Zion Baptist Church early in life and was ordained a deacon in 1950. He served as chairman of deacons and taught Sunday School class for many years. He entered the ministry in 1965 and became pastor of Piney Baptist Church in Hohenwald in January 1967. He pastored Knob Creek Baptist Church from 1976 until his retirement in 1998. Rev. Stockard kept busy driving a school bus, raising cattle, hay and gardening on the forty-seven acres he purchased in Columbia after selling the farm in Wayne County that had been a family possession for over 100 years. Survivors include three children, David Keith (Vivian Yates) Stockard of Columbia, Missouri; Jeffrey Lee (Virginia Hilliard) Stockard of Brentwood; Lora Jean Stockard (Jeffrey Martin) Bryant of Columbia; six grandchildren, Clayton (Ying) Stockard, Holly Stockard, Amber Bryant, Logan Bryant, Alyssa Stockard, Samuel Stockard; brother, Edmond Stockard of Nashville; sisters, Grace Agner, Bertha Haddock, and Elsie Cothran , all of Nashville; Pauline Kilburn of Waynesboro; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two children, Gloria Jean Stockard and Thresha "Sis" Stockard; brother, Robert Stockard; and sisters, Lou Ella Andrews, Dorothy Jo Clay, Mamie Dixon, and Marie Griggs. Active pallbearers will be Charles Griggs, Carl Wise, Michael Stockard, Bobby Stockard, Melvin Dixon, Jasper Smith, Jimmy Fitzgerald, Tommy Beard, James Ray Fraser, and Jackie Keaton. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Knob Creek Baptist Church.
