View Prayer Service Webcast Richard Paul Jarvis, 93, retired from Smith Transfer Company in Indianapolis, Indiana where he made his home for many years, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Family and friends will gather at Oakes & Nichols Saturday at 12:00 p.m. for a time of visitation concluding with a prayer service at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bob Adair officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, Indiana at a later date. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born in West Terre Haute in Virgo County, Indiana, he was the son of the late Harold R. Jarvis and Mary Anderson Jarvis Van Hook. During World War II, he served as a PFC in the U. S. Army in the European Theatre of Operation and Africa and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post #2000, and Teamsters Local #135 in Indianapolis. Since making his home in Columbia, he was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. In his leisure time, Mr. Jarvis loved bowling and playing golf. He was married in August, 1949 to the former Etta Aleatha Stewart, who preceded him in death in May, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Raymond L. Jarvis; step-father, Garnet Van Hook; and a niece, Patricia Jarvis Fletcher. Survivors include nieces, Betsy Jarvis (Lexie) Sparkman, Jo Anne Jarvis Retz, and Gail Jarvis Moser, all of Columbia; and a nephew, R. P. "Buzzy" (Shirley) Jarvis of Kingsport; several great-nieces and great-nephews.
