Rupert McPherson Colmore III

November 2, 1940 — October 8, 2025

Rupert McPherson Colmore, III died on October 8, 2025 after a brief illness. He was the eldest son of Virginia Guild and Rupert M. Colmore, Jr. and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eunice Ridley Colmore. Rupert was very proud of his three daughters, Mary Spindler, Dale Dominick ( Spencer ), and Eunice Rodman ( Doug ) and he adored his five grandchildren: Thomas Colton Duncan, Perrin Pullman Dominick, Susannah Colmore Rodman, Rupert McPherson ( Mac ) Rodman and Nora Colmore Dominick.

Rupert was born in Chattanooga, TN on November 2, 1940 and attended Bright School, graduated from The Baylor School in 1959 and boasted that he squeezed 4 years in to 6 at Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1965, but claiming the Class of ‘63. He served two years in the US Army and spent his career years pursuing various endeavors: working at Interstate Insurance Co. and Rossville Yarn before abandoning the business world to farm, reclaim old log structures and re-invent them as beautiful homes, and to live his dream of owning a ranch in Montana.

Poison Creek Ranch in Livingston, MT became a favorite summer and fall gathering place for family and friends and made it possible for Rupert to immerse himself in bird hunting, fly fishing, enjoying hours of telling stories and playing music on the porch and hanging out with his good friends at The Antler Bar in Clyde Park.

He was an avid Collector of unique things that reflected his many, diverse interests: guns, guitars, knives, cast iron cookware, bird dog prints, vintage cars, and old tools. His ultimate gesture of friendship was to gift a valued gun or knife as a thank you.

A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Rupert had a gift for seeing the potential in a parcel of property, investing wisely and leaving it much improved before moving on to his next conservation project. His love of dogs, one of his great passions in life, led him in to breeding, raising, training and hunting countless Red Setters, cultivating in the process 8 generations of highly prized dogs whose progeny are still covering ground and out pointing their hunting companions. He directed his family to, after his death, combine his ashes with those of his many dogs before committing them to the Montana wind on his ranch.

Rupert lived well, loved extravagantly and departed this life believing he was as blessed as a man could be.

A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Sunday, November 9 at the St Andrew’s Chapel on the campus of St Andrews - Sewanee School in Sewanee, TN. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Bic Boyte, Nelson Irvine, Charlie Howell, Dr. Richard Jones, Matt Looney, Dr. John Thomison, and Pete Wright. Memorials may be made to St Andrews - Sewanee School, 290 Quintard Road, Sewanee, TN 37375.
