Sammie Helen Prince Ledford

Sammie Helen Prince Ledford, 89, homemaker and resident of Columbia, died Friday, January 1, 2021 at The Bridge Assisted Living of Columbia. A private family graveside service will be held at Polk Memorial Gardens with Reverend Christine Penner officiating. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be extended online at Born May 18, 1931 in Armour Mines, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. Prince and the late Mae Isabell Prince. On July 8, 1948, she married R.D. Ledford who preceded her in death October 27, 2019. She was a 1948 graduate of Columbia Central High School. Mrs. Ledford was a lifetime mother, and avid golfer, where she won the senior Olympics in two different age divisions. After her husband retired, together they traveled the United States playing golf and watching The University of Tennessee play football. She was a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church. Survivors include her sons, Dwight (Jeanie) Ledford of Columbia; David (Martha) Ledford of Kingston; grandchildren, Brecca (Robbie) Meigs of Summertown; Heather (Keith) Urban of Lawrenceburg; Adam (Lindsey) Johnson of Culleoka; three great grandchildren; one great great grandson; sister, Betty Clark; of Sawdust; special niece, Janice Troope of Columbia; and several other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers. Active pallbearers will be Mike Prince, Pat Prince, Bobby Prince, Stan Bell, Frank Allen Thomas, and Garrett Jones. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of The Bridge Assisted Living of Columbia, her head sitter, Yulette Sparkman, and all of her sitters.
