Sarah Long Churchwell

March 19, 1923 — September 6, 2015

Sarah Ethelyne Long Churchwell, 92, died Sunday, September 6, 2015 at her residence on the Hampshire Pike surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Brian Gregory officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. An avid supporter of Columbia Academy, the family suggests that memorials be made in her memory to Columbia Academy, 1101 West 7th Street Columbia, TN 38401 or a charity of your choice. Notes of sympathy may be extended at oakesandnichols.com. Born in the Aetna Community in Hickman County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Edward Long and Annie Mae Ghist Long. She was a member of Eastside Church of Christ for many years and more recently Southgate Church of Christ. Mrs. Churchwell was associated with her husband for over thirty years and assisted him in operating Churchwell Sign Company in every aspect and was an active volunteer in the community. A doting Mother and Grandmother, she dearly loved sewing and making clothes for her family, knitting, and making dolls. Survivors include her husband of sixty-nine years, John Alfred Churchwell, whom she married January 15, 1946; children, John W. (Jeraldean) Churchwell and Phillis G. Churchwell; granddaughters, Kim (James) Dickinson, Tina (Willie) Baxter, and Amy (Rob) Elliott; great-grandchildren, Karlie Dickinson, Maverick Dickinson, Kaitlyn Dickinson, Logan Baxter, Cole Elliott, and Ashton Elliott; special niece and nephew, Joyce and Frankie Runions; brother, Austin E. (Irene) Long; brother-in-law, Newton R. (Helen) Churchwell; and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by a sisters, Era Cabbage and Jewell Adair; brothers, Joe Edward Long and John Fred Long. Active pallbearers are Danny Long, James Dickinson, Maverick Dickinson, Willie Baxter, Logan Baxter, and Rob Elliott. Honorary pallbearers include Ronald Long, Jimmy Long, Donnie Long, James Adair, Terry Adair, Jerry Adair, Dr. Bain, Dr. Ball, and Dr. Gardner. The family wishes to express appreciation to the Hospice Compassus Staff, Dr. Bain, Dr. Ball, and Dr. Gardner for their care and concern during her illness.
