View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast Shirley Ann Holt Walters, 74, retired registered nurse, died Monday, June 20, 2011 at her residence on Carter's Creek Pike. A funeral mass will be held Thursday at 12:00 noon at St. Catherine Catholic Church with Father Louis Rojas officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. concluding with a Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Deacon Price Keller officiating. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born November 3, 1936 in Loretto in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of the late William Anderson Holt and Anna Gieske Holt. Shirley moved to Columbia with her family at age 7 to the old University of Tennessee Experiment Station. Three years later, they moved to the 4-H Camp, where her father served as caretaker. She enjoyed helping her parents prepare for camp to start, including raising a garden that provided fresh vegetables for the campers all summer. During camp, she helped her mother sell cold drinks, candy, and ice cream in the camp canteen. Shirley attended St. Dominic's Catholic School through eighth grade and graduated from Central High School in 1955. She graduated from St. Thomas School of Nursing in 1958 as a Registered Nurse. Her nursing career began as a surgical nurse at Maury County Hospital and continued in the office of Dr. Valton C. Harwell. After raising her children, she resumed her nursing career working in the home health care and assisted living fields until her retirement in 2008. She met James Clayton "Jimmy" Walters and the two were married on the morning of November 19, 1960 at St. Catherine Catholic Church. Inseparable partners for 46 years, Jimmy and Shirley enjoyed their children and grandchildren, camping, attending walking horse shows, and traveling with friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Billy Holt in 2006, husband, Jimmy Walters in 2006, and daughter, Jan Walters Cook in 2010. Survivors include her son, John Anderson "Chip" Walters of Murfreesboro; daughter, Jennifer Anne (Vince) Springer of Spring Hill; grandchildren, Anna Elizabeth Cook, Jamie Katlyn Cook, Samuel Clayton Cook, Erin Anne Springer, Kenneth Bryant "Pete" Springer, and Cooper Holt Springer. Mrs. Walters was a long-time communicant of St. Catherine Catholic Church, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and LaFemme. Serving as active pallbearers are Sam Cook, Paul Holt, Donny Walters, Vince Springer, Mike Ford, Judge Bobby Holloway, Billy Reischman, Joe Ed Reischman, and Bob Bohrman. Honorary pallbearers include Bo Holloway, Will Holloway, Ben Holloway, Sam Holloway, Jimmy Ford, Bill DePriest, Anthony Sims, Stant Gunnells, Greg Gunnells, Randy Pomeroy Tommy Jones, Butch Newell, Stanley Silver, Kile Patrick, and friends at The Shop. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements.
