View Funeral WebcastSophia Rebecca Fuqua Harvill, 90, former long-time resident of Oak Drive, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, November 8, 2009. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Jason Whatley and Craig Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Union Cemetery in Hickman County. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church, 900 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born near the McEwen Community in Humphreys County, she was one of seven children of the late Jesse I. Fuqua and Lela Baker Fuqua. She attended Shiloh School and was a graduate of McEwen High School. Following her marriage to Melvin H. Harvill on March 1, 1941, they established their home in Columbia and were an integral part of the community for the remainder of their lives. Mr. Harvill preceded her in death July 20, 2001.Mrs. Harvill taught for a number of years at Columbia Nursery School. She was an excellent seamstress enjoyed poetry all her life. Mr. and Mrs. Harvill were devoted members of the Baptist Church all their lives and were active members of First Baptist Church where she taught children's Sunday School classes for a number of years. They were charter members of West End Baptist Church and Mrs. Harvill continued to teach children's classes and was active in the affairs of the Women of the Church. Survivors include her only daughter, Beverly (Don) Early of Brentwood; her beloved granddaughters, Alison (Craig) Reed, Shannon (Jeff) Epley, and Lauren (Jason) Whatley; their children, in whom she took great delight, William Reed, Caroline Reed, Owen Reed, Sophia Lynn Epley, Eva Claire Epley, Jay Epley, Samuel Whatley, Matthew Whatley, Mary Grace Whatley, and Kate Whatley; a brother, Alvin (Lillian) Fuqua of Nashville; many dearly loved relatives and friends, including her niece, Marilyn Cook and family.Pallbearers are Eddie Cook, Eric Cook, Jeff Epley, and Jim Burfield.
