Susan Giddens Sloan, 88, retired associate Professor of Nursing at Columbia State Community College, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at her residence on Sunnyside Drive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Thomas Wilson and The Rev. Richard Zalesak officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends in St. Peter's Parrish Hall from 10:00 a.m. to service time. Immediatley following the graveside service, family and friends will gather in St. Peter's Parish Hall for a celebration of Mrs. Sloan's life. Born in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Monroe Giddens and Cora Lee Jacobs Giddens and a 1940 graduate of Columbia Central High School. As a young lady, she was a member of the Columbia Girls' Cotillion. She earned a B.S. Degree in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in 1945, was a member of Sigma Delta Sigma Sorority and the Vanderbilt Quill Society. In 1969, she earned a Master's Degree in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University. Mrs. Sloan began her nursing career at Maury County Hospital and held the position of assistant director of Nursing for a number of years. She was instrumental in establishing, designing, and implementing the Nursing Program at Columbia State Community College and was serving as Associate Professor of the Nursing Program at her retirement. She was a member of the American Nursing Association and Tennessee Nursing Association. During World War II, she worked as a volunteer for the American Red Cross. She was a long-time communicant of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, member of the James K. Polk Association, Ladies Hermitage Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, Maury County Chapter, APTA, Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, Tennessee Farm Bureau, and active in the work of the Maury County Cancer Society. She was also a member of Graymere Country Club and an avid bridge player. She was married in August, 1946 to Allen Dorris Sloan, Jr. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Sloans bought and restored historic Oaklawn and made their home there for several years. The family also made their home on West Sixth Street for a number of years. Mr. Sloan died January 19, 1974. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Allen Dorris Sloan, III of Tucson, Arizona and Ernest Giddens "Pete" Sloan of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren, Susan Amanda Sloan of New Orleans, Louisiana and William Ashton Sloan of Portland, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Krickette Sloan of Tucson, Arizona. She was preceded in death by a sister, Nina Seay Giddens Caspari and daughter-in-law, Katherine Hennessey Sloan.
