View Funeral Webcast Thomas Leonard "Tommy" Kirk, 68, retired teacher, died Friday, June 25, 2010 at his residence on Nelson Street. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Mike Kesler officiating. Burial will follow in Worley Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Columbia Academy, 1101 West Seventh Street, Columbia 38401 or Middle Tennessee Christian School, 100 East MTCS Road, Murfreesboro 37129. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Hugh C. Kirk and Edna Fletcher Kirk. He was a 1960 graduate of Columbia Central High School, excelled in academics, was a member of the Marching and Concert Bands, and served as Band Captain. He earned a B. A. Degree from Harding University, Master's Degree from Middle Tennessee State University, and M. A. Plus 30 as an Education Specialist from Tennessee State University. He taught English and History at Columbia Central High School and served as Band Director for Hay Long High School in Mt. Pleasant. After his retirement from teaching, he partnered in the operation of several Nashville restaurants. He was an avid bridge player for many years. Since childhood, he was a member of West Seventh Street Church of Christ. Survivors include a sister, Anne (Edward C.) Ritchie of Murfreesboro; a brother, David F. (Linda) Kirk of Columbia; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Family and friends will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Elders and Deacons of West Seventh Street Church of Christ and members of the Porter King Sunday School Class.
