View Video Tribute Virgil Thomas "Tommy" Mayberry, 60, retired track foreman for CSX railroad, died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Vanderbilt University Medical after an extended illness with heart disease. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Chaplin Eddie Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born December 1, 1953 in Lewis County, he was the son of Douglas Mayberry and the late Betty Louise Staggs Mayberry. He was a 1972 graduate of Columbia Central High School. He was an avid sports fan and outdoorsman. Tommy was well known in the Maury County area as very talented baseball and softball player, playing with local teams including Action Properties in 70's and 80's. Along with managing some ball fields, he also coached girl's softball teams for several years. Due to his health he was forced to retire but that did not stop him from continuing to be a hard worker. He enjoyed remodeling, small handy man jobs, building outdoor furniture, such as decks and benches, and hunting. He dreamed of going on a Big Hunt out west one day and said that "deer and turkey called his name." Loving known as Tdaddy to all his grandchildren, he was a friend to all that knew him and he never met a stranger. Tdaddy was recognized in his old work truck, running errands and being a cab driver for school functions throughout the past few years for his grandsons and their friends. His free spirit and love of life will be missed by all that knew and loved him. In addition to his father, Douglas Mayberry, he is survived by his devoted wife of twelve years Janette Carson Mayberry of Columbia; daughters, Carrie Mayberry of Murfreesboro, Kaite Mayberry (Fernando) Esparza of Columbia; step-daughters, Cara Smith, Abby Smith both of Columbia, and Candy Chapman of Pulaski; grandchildren, Jalen Hunt, Kaelynn Blades, Gabriela Esparza and Isaac Olguin all of Columbia; brother Charlie (Lori) Mayberry of Santa Fe; sisters Mary Ann (Tim) Owens, Linda (Tony) Oliver, and Faye (Tim) Oliver all of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Louise Staggs Mayberry, and daughter, Jessica Mayberry. Active pallbearers will be Charlie Mayberry, Christopher Mayberry, Brent Staggs, Kevin Sherwin, and Breck Boyd. Honorary pallbearers include the staff and physicians of the Cardiac Units at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with special recognition to Casey Miller, VAD Coordinator/Nurse Practitioner for going above and beyond in the care and compassion shown to Tommy and his family. The family would also like to thank the Palliative Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for their expertise and devotion.
