View Video TributeView Funeral Webcast William Thomas "Tommy" Nicholson, 93, retired employee of John Bouchard & Sons in Nashville, died Friday, November 15, 2013 at his residence in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Wedgewood officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Tuesday after 10:00 A.M. at the church. The family suggests memorials to Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church, 202 South Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born February 17, 1920 in the Sawdust Community of Maury County, he was the fourth of ten children of the late George Taylor Nicholson and Lutie Mai Brown Nicholson. On August 15, 1942 he married Lucile Elaine Smith Nicholson who preceded him in death on November 18, 1968. He later married Georgia Ellene "Tena" Dodson Nicholson on August 20, 1972 and she preceded him in death on October 21, 1998. Mr. Nicholson was a 1938 graduate of Hay Long High School where he played football for three years. He was drafted in the U. S. Army on September 17, 1941 and received an honorable discharge on April 17, 1942. After his retirement from John Bouchard & Sons, he was employed at Dillard's Department Store. He was a former longtime resident of Brentwood and Columbia. Mr. Nicholson was a charter member and second President of the Mt. Pleasant Lion's Club. He also served on the Maury County School Board in the 1950's and was a former hospital volunteer with Maury Regional Auxiliary. He was an avid sports enthusiast of Vanderbilt Commodores sports and Atlanta Braves Baseball. Mr. Nicholson was an excellent cook, and enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with his dog Nicky. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church, where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent and former Adult Leader of Methodist Youth Fellowship. Survivors include five daughters, Patricia Nicholson McClanahan and Lavinia Nicholson Gossett, both of Mt. Pleasant; Cynthia Nicholson (Larry) Jarnigan and Charlotte Nicholson Frey, both of Brentwood; Christy Nicholson (Scott) Badger of Nashville; two brothers, James Carroll (Jeanette) Nicholson of Johns Island, SC; Wray Eugene (Janette) Nicholson of Gallatin; one sister, Dorothy Louise (Wright) Mabry of Columbia; six grandchildren who affectionately called him "Pop", William M. McClanahan, Paul Thomas (Auga) Gossett, Jr., Alicia Elaine McClanahan, Lucy Ann Gossett, M. Brandon (Melissa) Jarnigan, N. Grant Jarnigan; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one sister-in-law, Barbara D. Nicholson of Columbia. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Matthews, Sarah Agnes Nicholson, Nell Ruth Hayes; three brothers, George Edward Nicholson, John Franklin Nicholson, Joshua Brown Nicholson; and two sons-in-law, William Martin Frey, Sr., and Paul Thomas Gossett, Sr. Active pallbearers will be William M. McClanahan, Paul Thomas Gossett, Jr., M. Brandon Jarnigan, N. Grant Jarnigan, Larry Jarnigan, and Scott Badger. Honorary pallbearers will be Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church J. O. Williams Sunday School Class and McDonald's Breakfast Friends.
