Mrs. Virginia Smith Burke, 88, resident of Morning Pointe in Columbia, died Sunday, April 14, 2013 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 12:00 noon at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with John Payne officiating. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. On December 22, 1944 she married Rice Jefferson Burke, Jr. who preceded her in death February 18, 2006. She worked several years at Genesco Shoe Factory. Mrs. Burke was a former member of the Home Demonstration Club in Centerville. She loved sewing, crocheting and enjoyed playing golf with her husband. In 1992 she and her husband moved to Columbia from Lewisburg. She was a member of Graymere Church of Christ. Survivors include her sisters, Isabelle Jackson of Madison, Ruby (Richard) Riggs of Franklin; brothers, Paul Smith of Murfreesboro, Mike (June) Smith, Jr. of Brentwood, Charles Smith of Donelson; sisters-in-law Joyce Smith, Frances Smith; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
