Virginia Thomison McCamy, 90, retired teacher and former long-time resident of Columbia, died Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Hospice Atlanta. Born September 21, 1921 in Dayton, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Sarah Magill and Ralph Preston Thomison of Athens. She attended Ward-Belmont College for Women in Nashville and was a graduate of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During World War II, she worked for the American Red Cross in Memphis and Milledgeville. Mrs. McCamy and her family made their home in Columbia for a number of years where she taught eighth grade English at Whitthorne Junior High School for twenty years. She continued as a private tutor following her retirement. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active in community affairs as a member of The King's Daughters, James K. Polk Memorial Association, Maury County Retired Teachers' Association, Columbia Garden Club, Graymere Country Club and Graymere Ladies Golf Association. An avid bridge player, she continued playing duplicate bridge well into her 80s. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Felker McCamy and a granddaughter, Meredith "Molly" Pendleton Menning. Survivors include her daughter, Sarah "Sally" McCamy Menning of Atlanta; sons, Steve Felker McCamy, Jr. of Atlanta and Thomas "Tom" Stokley McCamy, III of Washington, D. C.; grandson, Colby Preston (Moire) Menning; and great-granddaughter, Mary McCamy Menning. Graveside services will be conducted at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens, Tennessee at a later date.
