View Video TributeView Funeral Webcast Wendell C. Nelson, 64, resident of New Highway 7, died Monday, August 27, 2012 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Anthony Muston officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to American Heart Association, P.O. The Maury County native was the son of the late Melvin Lee Nelson and Lucy Irwin Nelson. He was retired from Kroger after forty-four years of service. Mr. Nelson enjoyed computers, woodworking and building things with his hands. He was a member of Knob Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Virginia Howell Nelson of Columbia; daughter, Gina Darlene (Michael) Potts of Columbia; grandson, Kody Todd Simmons of Columbia; step-grandson, Dustin Michael Potts of Lewisburg; sisters, Frances Erwin of Texas City, Texas, Carolyn Nelson and Dorothy Ladd both of Columbia; brothers, William (Pat) Nelson of Franklin, Melvin (Johna) Nelson, Jr. of Dickinson, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary Dwayne Nelson and his pet dog, Chipper and horse, Trouble. Active pallbearers include Zack Caperton, Ray Holden, Charlie Lee, Kevin Bass, Curtis Flowers and Rick Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers include former Kroger co-workers and Facebook Friends.
