View Funeral WebcastMr. William Austin Pigg, 85, retired from Stauffer Chemical Company and resident of Winding Way, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Centennial Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with John Vaughan and Wendell Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Autism Society of Middle Tennessee, 955 Woodland Street, Nashville 37206. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Lawrence County native was the son of the late Guy Washington Pigg and Zinnie Pearl Vandygriff Pigg. He enlisted in the U. S. Army January 16, 1943 and was discharged December 23, 1945. He was assigned to duty as Truck Master with the 463rd Quartermaster Truck Company in Australia. During his 31 months service, he was in the Bismarch Archipelago and New Guinea Campaigns and earned the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and Phillippine Liberation Victory Medals. He was married May 2, 1950 in Corinth, Mississippi to the former Sara Thankful Breece of Hickman County, retired registered nurse at Maury Regional Medical Center. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to Australia, returning to various sites of his military service. Mr. Pigg was associated with Stauffer Chemical Company in Mt. Pleasant as a First Class Mechanic for 38 years and 8 months and served as job steward for many years. He served as a Constable of the 11th Civil District in Lawrence County 1956-1957; was a member of the Summertown Men's Club and with the help of other members established the first rural water system. He was Scout Master of Troop #280 in Summertown during the 1960s; served as president of Local #912, International Union of Operating Engineers 1986-1987; was a life-time member of Veterans of Foreign Wars; and charter member of the World War II Memorial. He was a long-time, faithful member of Graymere Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Sara Thankful Breece Pigg of Columbia; daughters, Linda (John) Moore of Mt. Juliet and Anita (Patrick) Porter of Franklin, Kentucky; sons, Jimmy (Elaine) Pigg of Hoover, Alabama, Ronnie Pigg, formerly of Columbia, now living in Lancaster, Tennessee, and Randy (Barbara) Pigg of Brentwood; grandchildren, Travis Pigg, James Moore, Andy Pigg, Christopher, Pigg, and Cody Porter; brother, Clarence (Lorene) Pigg of Summertown; sisters-in-law, Virginia Pigg of Summertown and Ava Johnson of Centerville; brothers-in-law, Boyd Crowder of Powell and William Edwards of Hohenwald; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Pigg and an infant brother. Mr. Pigg's grandsons, Gene Pigg, and Robert Woods will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include retirees from the Maintenance Department of Stauffer Chemical Company and friends and fellow U. S. Army inductees.
