William Thomas "Bill" Fly

View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast William Thomas “Bill” Fly was born in the Sawdust community on January 17, 1938 to William Claude “WC” Fly, Jr. and Gladys Christine Thomas Fly. He died Thursday, September 15, 2022 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia with his wife and 5 children by his side. Bill’s pride and joy was his family. He married Carolyn Sue Gibson Fly on December 13, 1958. Together they raised five children in the Williamsport community. He was beloved Daddy Bill to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cherishing his precious memory are Tommy and Cindy Fly Hutcherson of Water Valley, their sons Glenn and Mark Hutcherson, and granddaughter Arley Mae Roberson; Quintin and Vicki Fly Walline of Monument, CO, their children Suzi Bratton Cox, Ben and Krystle Bratton Daugherty, and granddaughters Sydney and Molly Bratton and Malea Daugherty; Scott and Mary Gale Fly Snyder of Columbia; Larry “Boo” and Terri Carol Fly Gordon of Williamsport and their daughter Rebekah Gordon; and Tommy and Betsy Perry Fly of Leoma, and their children William Fly and Laura Beth Nichols, Sam and Madison Fly McConnell and their daughters McKinley and Charleigh, Declan and Jenna Fly Ray, and Lily Fly. He is also survived by sisters Mary Ellen Hill and Sandra Gibson Alderson Lindsey and special cousin Jerry Fly. Bill worked for many years for Sunbeam Bread before he and Sue became owners and operators of Duncan’s Grocery in Williamsport. Bill was a farmer and loved time spent raising cattle, and growing tobacco, corn, and soybeans. He was a nurturer and a provider for his family. In his younger years he raced go-carts and played baseball. He loved time spent riding country roads, reminiscing, gospel music, sports, and a Whopper Junior from Burger King. His favorite pastime was fishing and he loved an Alabama football win. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his grandsons Bobby Bratton and Ross Walline, sister Wanda Ann Fly Billingsley, and brothers-in-law Charles Alderson, Phil Lindsey, and Adron Billingsley. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Mylen Coble and Allen Lancaster officiating. Burial will follow in Santa Fe Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Santa Fe Cemetery, c/o Mark and Mimi Priest, 3782 Raleigh Beard Road, Santa Fe, TN 38482, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital, 2200 Children’s Way, Nashville, TN 37232. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Pallbearers will be Bill’s grandchildren, Jeff Lancaster, and Robert Dycus. Honorary pallbearers include Jerry Fly, Raymond and Lucille Truette, Rick Howell, Heather Dale, Hope Dale Hudson, Joe Shelby, Dr. Thomas Dake, Dr. Ben Gardner, Vishal and Megha Patel, John Bone, Heath Bone, Eddie Alderson, Mike Lindsey, Don Fly, and Adrianna “Henrietta” Langley. The family would like to thank the first floor and CCU nurses of Maury Regional Hospital for the skilled and compassionate care provided to Bill and his family.
