Willie Bentley "Aunt Horstmann

August 19, 1909 — July 1, 2010

Mrs. Willie Bentley Horstmann, 100, retired bookkeeper for the Boy Scouts of America and resident of Nashville, died Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Alive Hospice in Nashville. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Rose Hill Cemetery. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 38203. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born August 20, 1909 in Bronte, Coke County, Texas, she was the daughter of the former Sallie Childress of Columbia and Richard Ellis Bentley, Sr. of Lawrenceburg. In 1947 she married Charles W. Horstmann of Chicago, Illinois, who preceded her in death in 1981. Affectionately known by everyone as "Aunt Willie", she graduated from St. Cecilia Academy in 1927 and later studied at Ward-Belmont College, majoring in design. She spent her early working years assisting Dr. Teachout and later Dr. McGruder. At a time when most would have retired she continued working with the Boy Scouts of America until she reached the age of 85 years. She was a communicant of St. George's Episcopal Church in Nashville since 1952. Not having children of her own, she put her energies into her marriage and work. One of her main joys in life concerned her many nieces and nephews and their offspring. Although a number of them were not Nashville residents, she was able, even in her later years to visit them and always relished their visits to Nashville. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Flora B. deZevallos and Antionette B. Henson and her two brothers, George F. Bentley and Richard E. Bentley, Jr. Aunt Willie has been adored by their offspring as follows: Fisher deZevallos, George deZevallos, George Henson, all of Nashville; William Bentley, Bruce Bentley, Edward deZevallos, Jr., all of Houston, Texas; Judy Anne Furr and Sue Caylor, both of Denison, Texas; Betty Joiner of Montgomery, Texas; Robert Bentley of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Richard Bentley and George Bentley, Jr. of Lafayette, Louisiana; Suzanne Bentley-Smith of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Bobby Henson of Lillian, Alabama; as well as many great and great great nieces and nephews. All of us will miss her realistic, if often sarcastic, take on life as well as her many famous sayings and adages. Never one to check her comments on life and others, what she said was indeed what she was thinking. Yes, our dear Aunt Willie, we will indeed "See you later, when our legs are straighter".
